What are Cockatiel Birds?
Cockatiel birds are members of the parrot family; one of the small parrot in the various types of parrots. DNA research has proven that the cockatiels belong to one of the cockatoo family native to Australia. Most pet cockatiel birds are now bred in captivity since Australia has banned exportation of all native birds long ago.
Among the different types of parrots, cockatiel birds are the second most popular pet birds next to the parakeet (another member of the parrot family). They are well-liked choices because of their intelligence, colorful and varied color mutations as well as their affectionate and delightfully entertaining nature. If well taken care of and especially if the bond with owner is deep, a pet cockatiel can provide delightful entertainment and companionship.
The average lifespan of cockatiel birds is between 12 to 15 years but with the advancement in avian veterinary and with the proper care it is not unusual for a cockatiel to live up to 20 years. There are even occasional birds that make it to 30 years!
These elegant and exotic looking cockatiel birds are well known for their intelligence and delightfully good natured disposition. Although not known to be one of the types of parrots that can talk, the cockatiel birds are famous for whistling tunes and mimicking sounds. Once in a while one can encounter a talking cockatiel but it is more of an exception than the rule. But it will be a delightful experience listening to a talking cockatiel particularly with its cute childish voice.
Cockatiel birds are social birds even in the wild; they never really lead a solitary life and always travel either in pairs or small flocks. This is the main reason why pet cockatiels need to be with people or other cockatiels. Cockatiel birds, just like humans, need a lot of attention and care. Like most of the different types of parrots kept as pets, cockatiel birds can become extremely moody and temperamental if not given proper care and training.
Most of their behaviors in the wild, their coping and survival actions are the same even in captivity so it should be wise for pet owners to be aware of all these. If your pet is screaming, it just might be that he is sensing danger, or informing and signaling other cockatiel birds (or if alone, you) about food or his location.
Wild cockatiel birds subsist on fruits, berries, grain, seedlings, small insects and even cultivated crops. Captive bred cockatiel birds, although there are available pelleted diets, still need to have a variety of food choices to stay healthy and alert.
Cockatiel birds are one of the most lovable pets in the world and are valuable treasures to the owner. They can give you countless hours of companionship and entertainment. A wise cockatiel pet owner is one who is aware of and well informed about proper care and training of his pets as well as the common cockatiel birds illnesses.
